MRI

Mankato Regional Imaging at OFC offering the comfort and convenience of both High Field Open-Sided and Large Bore (opening) MRI scanners. Our staff will assist you and your physician in helping to decide which is best for you.

What is MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) combines a powerful magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce accurate, detailed pictures of organs and tissues to diagnose a variety of medical conditions. This is accomplished without the use of radiation or radioactive substances of any kind.

Preparing For Your MRI

1. Preparation

No special preparation is needed prior to the exam unless your doctor has given you other instructions. You can eat normally and continue to take prescribed medications as required. Depending on what information your doctor needs, the MRI scan may require the use of a contrast agent given intravenously to assist in visualizing certain structures in the body.

If possible wear loose, comfortable clothing, free of zippers, buttons or other metal.

You will need to remove all metal objects that you may be carrying such as:

  • Watches, Jewelry
  • Wallets, Purses, Credit cards
  • Cell Phones, Eyeglasses
  • Hairpins
  • Dentures
  • Hearing Aides

2. Examination

You will be instructed to lie comfortably on the scanning table and a special coil will be positioned close to the area of your body being examined. You can then relax while the scanner and the technologist do the work. You will be able to communicate with the technologist during the exam with the use of a call button & headset/speakers.

While the machine is taking your pictures you will hear loud knocking noises (listen here). During this time, it is important that you refrain from any movement or coughing. Headphones or earplugs will be provided to protect your ears during the exam. If you choose headphones, you can select from any of the Sirius XM Satellite Radio stations.

An average scan will take 45 – 60 minutes.

3. Getting Results

Your images will be interpreted by sub-specialty, board-certified radiologists. We will promptly provide your physician an accurate interpretation of your scan.

The findings will be sent to your healthcare provider, who will discuss the results in his/her office or contact you by phone.
